Waking up on a seem to be normal morning, only to have your day turned upside down by water is not something you encounter everyday and it is definitely not something that I would like to experience ever again.
It had rained ± 400mm in 1 day... that's about the amount of rain that we receive in a year,  Room 6 and 7 were under water and we had to swim to the room to rescue the furniture and linen.  The other rooms were dangerously close to being under water from the water level pushing up and all we could do is watch... How do you fight against something so powerfull!
Shoes out and towels everyweher, staff bustling around trying to get everthing dry, transfer companies phoning to get news on the road, guests getting ready to leave after their stay.. all happening at the same time and still the water getting higher...
Needless to say, at the time the guests where ready to leave the raods have continued to get worse and small streams were now strong flowing rivers.  Johan's car got pushed down and to prevent water coming into the engine he had to switch off and wait for it to get stuck on a shallow area.
When the others caught up and everybody reached the tar road we thought the worse was over up till we got to 100meters before the control gate, the tar was washed away - see photos. We were stuck again.  After a day Gomo's owner Van Zijl made a plan and he fixed a service road next to the massive gap and only then transfers, deliveries etc could continue.
Back at the lodge the electricity went out, and all you could hear was the start of generators, from there on switching on any plugs was done by checlists of need to be...
Late that afternoon we started seeing helicopters coming over and that was when we realised that somehwere, other people where in alot more trouble than us and afterwards hearing of the other lodges that had so much damage with nothing left,we has shivers down our spines and could only say thank you!!
It was a rough couple of days, but through everything we the Gomo team managed, Every meal was served the Gomo way, neatly and in style, Rooms where cleaned and up to standard as usual.  Now almost a month down the line after those late nights, early mornings, no electricity, picking up guest at the hole (control gate)... Gomo is going strong and we look forward welcoming you all...

Keep well and safe - Linda and staff

A lot of change since the last update,  as you all know we had a massive flood... The animals have also been affected, we still see a lot of animals and the sightings have been great, but there is plenty of water all over.
The Lions have split up, Bertha and Lisa with the 2 cubs are on their own and then the 2 males and four females hang out together.  There is also a new male with a collar that we have not seen before.

See you all soon

Greetings from the Gomo Gomo team – November 2011

Hi everyone it’s been an awesome month so far in the bush with the wild life being plentiful and the summer season getting into full swing.  The bush has completely transformed from a grey dull site to a lush green landscape from the first seasonal rains!

The Ross pride are doing well with all members still intact but there are 2 adult females, Chucks mom and Droopy which are not looking very healthy at the moment, it looks like it’s veering towards the end of their .  The rest are healthy and fit and we have had good sightings of them in the beginning of the month, half way through the month the left the traversing area, since then we have not had a sighting of the whole pride again.

The 2 adult males caught a Buffalo bull on the boundaries, the cubs are also doing very well and getting bigger by the day. With the 2 bigger cubs having their first birthday in a couple of days. Fat and happy – see photos

The leopards in the area are also doing fine Kwatzima is getting increasingly use to the vehicles and in daytime, her 2 cubs are also becoming very independent and is reaching that time or very close where they will separate from the their mother and go their separate ways, we hope though they stay in the area

The other very relaxed adult female Cleo we see frequently and we have good sightings with her.  Joubers female and her cubs are very elusive and we only get glimpses of them.

Getting to the Elephants, they are at the drinking spot in front of the lodge daily, big and small come to drink and play.  We have had a couple of exciting encounters with Bulls in must, which keeps the adrenalin pumping!

Rhinos are plentiful and sightings of them are picking up as the rainy season progresses.  Legend is making his regular stops at our dam when it is very hot and actually successfully won a territorial bout against a rival which I think is a good confidence booster for him and will maybe increase his chances to get the girlfriend… We think he can do with the company…

We also had 2 very good sightings of Wild Dog’s  the same ones we are getting to see more and more off.

Cheetahs have not been seen the last couple of weeks, but the Buffalos have been here in big herds.

Well that is for now, we will keep you updates

Best regards

Hi there everyone

What a great month it has been. I think it was one of the best one’s so far.

As everybody already knows we only have four lion cubs left in the Ross pride, and they are doing extremely well. Bertha who is the mother of the two smaller dark ones is an excellent mother and she is also looking after Lisa’s two bigger cubs. It looks like the Giraffe boys are going to stay with the Ross pride and they are mating again, so keep your fingers cross for another white lion cub.

This month alone we’ve seen the Lions about forty times and three of them were at Buffalo kills.

The Giraffe pride with the sub-adult white female is also in good health. We saw her about five times again this month and it looks like there might be about twenty three lions in that pride. They keep more to the South of the area that we traverse on.

The Leopard sightings have been exceptional so far. Kwatzima and her two cubs are doing good, they are the ones we see the most. She is still a little skittish but her to cubs are very relaxed with the vehicle. The other day we had three different leopard sightings with kills. Kwatzima and her two cubs, Cleo and her one cubs and Joubert and her cub all killed an Impala. The kills were made on the ground but they took it up a tree for the night..

We also spotted B.L, the male Leopard on an afternoon drive and we spent two and a half hours just following him. It looked like he got into a fight with with his eyes being swollen and a huge scratch on his nose. This month we had about twenty-six sightings with leopards.

The Elephants are still plenty. Coming down to drink at the lodge’s dam almost daily. The herd’s got plenty of calves so it’s a pleasure just observing them while they’re having fun playing around.

The Rhino’s are plentiful at the moment and we see them on almost every drive, sometimes up to seven on one drive. Legend has been coming down to the lodge for the past few weeks, drinking water and just wallowing in the mud until he’s satisfied and ready to graze the rest of the day. He’s had a hard month so far, losing a couple of fights and we think he’s lost eye sight in his left eye during one of these fights. The other Rhino with the weird growth on the side of his horn has been named Billabong.

The special sightings for this month was seeing a pack of thirteen wild dogs, eight adults and five pups, hunting Impala but they missed their chance.

We also saw four different Cheetah’s. The two brothers we found on an Impala kill, the female with the collar that we saw one afternoon, relaxing on a termite mound and another female cheetah in the south that we haven’t  seen before. All in all we’ve seen about twelve cheetah’s in this area. The two brothers being the most regular of them all.

So as you can see we’ve had a very busy and productive month.

We would also like to welcome Linda to the Gomo Gomo Family, she’s the assistant manager and has taken over all the office work, so I’m back in the bush where I belong.

Hope to see you all soon.

New and Old // Sad and Happy

Hello Everyone

Today we have some sad news to tell.... The white Lion cub and the 2 tawny's have been killed by one of the other females in their own pride.  The female know as Chuck's Mom, who's got a broken leg was the culprit.  She's to weak to hunt and to keep up with the pride, so it was an easy prey for her.
But all not lost, we've got hope for the future now that we know these Lions carry the white gene, we hope to let you know soon of new white cubs.  The other Lions are all doing very well, we have found them on five different buffalo kills the last couple of weeks.  Currenlty there are 2 Lions, 9 Lionesses and 4 cubs in the pride.

Kwatzima's (the leopard) cubs are doing well and we see them on a very regular basis.  the other day they killed a vervet monkey, but a Hyena came along and stole the kill from them ...
Cleo is still in the area as well as Joubert's female but she has only 1 cub left.

The Rhino is plentiful at the moment, see our facebook page for pics,  and for the past week they've been coming down to the lodge to drink at the watering hole in front of the lodge.  We have been seeing a male Rhino with a weird growth on it's horn and he is almost as relaxed as Legend.

The big herd of Elephants are coming back to the area now that it is turning into summer.  Most of the other water holes are drying up so we see them a lot at the lodge.  The herd that has got the young female with the broken leg has also returned and she is still keeping up with them.

On a happy and new note we welcome Linda as our Assistant to Andre and Front of House, see  letters to follow and Danie as Ranger, who has been with us before as a student

Keep well - The Gomo Rangers

Amazing July 2011

Hi there Everyone
We had an Amazing month of July 2011 one of the best ever.
The Elephant herds are almost every day drinking at the dam in front of the lodge.  Looks like they are here to stay for the rest of the winter again.
We had a lot of Buffalo herds passing thru the biggest one being about 800 strong and you know what happens then, the Lions follow them and we found them on 3 seperate buffalo kills.
Rhinos have been very good, we see Legend probably 5 times a week he is moving between the dams on our property.  We have also found a crash of 7 Rhinos on our property a couple of times.

Kwatsima and her 2 cubs are doing very good the cubs are more relaxed se we see them more often that their mother.  Joubers is still around but she is keeping herself a little bit on the scarce side with her 2 cubs.  For the past 3 weeks we jave seen a leopard in camp every night not so sure who he is but lucky for us he runs away as soon as you see him on foot.

Well as you might have heard we have the youngest white Lion in the wild at the moment, the cub is about 5 weeks old and has 2 other siblings who are the normal tawny color.  The mother is Patches and the father on of the males from the Giraffe pride.  We also have 3 other females with cubs, Lisa who has got the 2, eight month old ones, Bertha who has got the 2, five month old ones and then a couple of days ago we found another female with cubs not so sure who she is of how old the cubs are. So in short we currenlty have 2 Males, 9 Females and about 9 cubs in the Ross pride!

Then on another note, we said our good buys to Carolien, who is starting her own busniess and Erich who has gone for further his studies, we wish them all the best, and I am sure our paths will cross again.
Then we say welcome the Daniel, as the new ranger at the lodge!

Well that's all for now, visit our facebook page for more pictures on the cubs and hope to welcome you soon
All the best
