The Flood and us February 2012
Waking up on a seem to be normal morning, only to have your day turned upside down by water is not something you encounter everyday and it is definitely not something that I would like to experience ever again.
It had rained ± 400mm in 1 day... that's about the amount of rain that we receive in a year, Room 6 and 7 were under water and we had to swim to the room to rescue the furniture and linen. The other rooms were dangerously close to being under water from the water level pushing up and all we could do is watch... How do you fight against something so powerfull! Shoes out and towels everyweher, staff bustling around trying to get everthing dry, transfer companies phoning to get news on the road, guests getting ready to leave after their stay.. all happening at the same time and still the water getting higher... Needless to say, at the time the guests where ready to leave the raods have continued to get worse and small streams were now strong flowing rivers. Johan's car got pushed down and to prevent water coming into the engine he had to switch off and wait for it to get stuck on a shallow area. When the others caught up and everybody reached the tar road we thought the worse was over up till we got to 100meters before the control gate, the tar was washed away - see photos. We were stuck again. After a day Gomo's owner Van Zijl made a plan and he fixed a service road next to the massive gap and only then transfers, deliveries etc could continue. Back at the lodge the electricity went out, and all you could hear was the start of generators, from there on switching on any plugs was done by checlists of need to be... Late that afternoon we started seeing helicopters coming over and that was when we realised that somehwere, other people where in alot more trouble than us and afterwards hearing of the other lodges that had so much damage with nothing left,we has shivers down our spines and could only say thank you!! It was a rough couple of days, but through everything we the Gomo team managed, Every meal was served the Gomo way, neatly and in style, Rooms where cleaned and up to standard as usual. Now almost a month down the line after those late nights, early mornings, no electricity, picking up guest at the hole (control gate)... Gomo is going strong and we look forward welcoming you all... Keep well and safe - Linda and staff A lot of change since the last update, as you all know we had a massive flood... The animals have also been affected, we still see a lot of animals and the sightings have been great, but there is plenty of water all over. The Lions have split up, Bertha and Lisa with the 2 cubs are on their own and then the 2 males and four females hang out together. There is also a new male with a collar that we have not seen before. See you all soon Johan - Head Ranger |
